Cioch Mountaineering Club, Dunfermline

The Cioch Mountaineering Club which was formed in 1988, is based in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland and is affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS).  Through the MCofS our members receive the benefit of 3rd Party Insurance.  We are a small friendly club with around 50 members who have a common interest in hillwalking, rock and ice climbing, ski-ing and other outdoor activities.  We arrange regular weekend meets in some of Scotland’s most beautiful locations where we stay in independent or private bunkhouses and where the cost normally ranges between £6 - £15 per night.  We’ve now included links to the websites for the bunkhouses that we use.  Click here to see.

All experience levels are catered for - we have a number of members who have climbed all of Scotland’s Munro’s (separate mountains over 3000 feet), some more than once, as well as members who are just starting out and have climbed only a handful.

The Club is also affiliated to the Friends of the Ochils, and we make regular donations to charities such as mountain rescue organisations.

We meet every Thursday at 8.45pm in the lounge at the Lyne Tavern (sometimes known as Jinty’s Lounge), where we have exclusive use, at the traffic lights on the corner of Moodie Street and Nethertown Broad Street, DunfermlineHere members, friends and visitors plan their own trips, book places on weekend meets and have a drink and chat. New or prospective members are always very welcome, so just come along, or contact one of the members identified at the bottom of this page.

During the winter months, our members hold regular free slide shows and also public lectures.  See the Club News for details.

If you are interested in rock climbing, then come along to Rosyth Quarry (near Junction 1 of the M90) on Thursdays in the summer at about 6pm and go on to Jinty’s afterwards.  All are welcome.  The idea is to get beginners together and give them a go at climbing outdoors.  Members meet at Alien Rock in Edinburgh most Tuesday evenings for a bit of indoor climbing.

Cioch Mountaineering Club—An Anecdotal History
To mark 20 years of achievement by the Club and its members we have published a commemorative booklet. Find out how the club was founded; what the Club’s role was in the Carnegie Leisure Centre climbing wall; the story behind the attempts to have a club hut; and many other fascinating facts about our club and the people who have made it. Discover the Club’s characters – old and new – from stories and meet reports written by them. This is a significant contribution to the social and sporting history of Dunfermline and to the story of Scottish mountaineering clubs. Very reasonably priced at only £5 and available from SUMMITS in Dunfermline or from Chris.
